Regency Magazine (Brighton): Dental Health for Children
www.regencymagazine.co.uk
Dental Health Spa in Queen’s Road have launched Spa Kids which is dedicated to teaching children about oral hygiene.
I was really interested to re-visit Dental Health Spa in Queen’s Road which I covered in an earlier issue of Regency soon after they opened two years ago. The Director is Christina Chatfield, who is passionate about oral hygiene and who opened her clinic to ensure that excellent treatments were easily accessible to everyone. She is a dental hygienist with over 25 years experience in practice and within blue chip health companies, so I particularly wanted to know why she had felt the need to launch Spa Kids earlier this year.
The main reason I discovered is the sad and shocking fact that in the UK today around 40% of all 5 year olds have experienced some form of tooth decay and that dental disease is one of the main reasons why children have to receive a general anaesthetic. This is the result of either a poor diet or the fact that children have never been shown how to clean their teeth properly or a combination of these two reasons. It also does not help that apparently many dentists rarely refer children for hygienist treatment, but rather give the standard 10 minute checkup, then undertake any fillings as and when they are required and simply put the child's teeth ‘on watch’, sometimes without even giving advice on the best way for them to clean them to help to avoid future problems. Regency Magazine (Brighton): Give Your Teeth A Healthy Makeover
www.regencymagazine.co.uk
Often in REGENCY we are tempting you towards the sweeter things in life. If such delights are causing havoc
with your pearlies, there is a solution ...
Several years ago Christina Chatfield, the Clinical Director of Dental Health Spa in Queens Road, had a dream about bringing a new and far more comprehensive kind of dental care to the public in Brighton, as she realised that there was a serious shortage of dental hygienists not just in this city but in fact throughout the UK - on average only one for every 15,000 people! Press Release: Launch of revolutionary interactive teeth cleaning system for kids
One of the UK's first dental hygiene clinics, Brighton's Dental Health Spa, is leading the way in oral health for children by launching Spa Kid's, a welcoming child focused area which features the revolutionary Oralinsights Intelligent Oral Cleaning - a breakthrough in interactive, personalised education system specifically designed to motivate improved brushing behaviour for children with their adult teeth. Spa Kids opens on 25 April and will be the first clinic in the country to use Oralinsights interactive oral cleaning system. Christina Chatfield hygienist and owner of Dental Health Spa believes in focussing on preventative rather than restorative dentistry and believes that the oralinsights cleaning system will revolutionise kids oral health.

The Oralinsights interactive system being introduced in Spa Kid's is a portable unit that allows the patient and the dental professional to view the child's tooth brushing in real-time 3D. It consists of a laptop computer, tracking system, bespoke hardware (headset, chinstrap and measurement probe) and software. The software generates virtual models of the patients teeth and jaw and tracks the position and motion of a toothbrush relative to their teeth and jaw. From this information a picture can be built up of the total time spent tooth brushing, time the brush was in contact with each tooth surface and a visualisation of the least brushed "hotspot" tooth surfaces. This then generates a feedback report for the patient. The dental professional from Spa Kids will then teach the child techniques to improve their brushing and the amount of time spent brushing in order to make a real difference to their oral hygiene for the future.
Brushing your teeth effectively is greatly affected by both technique and time spent brushing. Over time, children have often developed an individual brushing pattern that they stick to every time they brush. If they have never been given specific home-care instructions for effective tooth brushing, then the same tooth surfaces will always be left un-cleaned, allowing plaque to accumulate.
Oral Health Instruction provided by dental professionals can play an important role in maximising the benefits of tooth brushing. The implementation of an effective brushing behaviour will in turn improve oral health and reduce occurrence of gum disease.
Christina Chatfield says:
"most children now have access to computer games such as WII and PSP2 and so this new technology will feel familiar to the majority who come in the door. I believe in setting children up with the correct tools to ensure their dental health is in the best possible shape to serve them into adult life."
Spa Kid's will open with an exclusive event at the Queens Road clinic on Saturday 25 April.

Sussex Life: Gateway to Better Health - February edition - Christina quoted
Christina Chatfield was quoted promoting the importance of personal oral hygiene in Sussex Life, February 2009.
"Hygienist Christina Chatfield from Brighton's Dental Health Spa says the most important thing for us all to do all we can to do all we can to keep our mouths healthy with regular brushing, flossing and, of course, visits to the hygienist.
"Anything people can do to break up the bacteria will help keep their mouths in good health. The challenge is motivating people to do so. When people visit their hygienist the chances are they haven't been flossing regularly and they're probably feeling anxious about it - the last thing they want is a lecture. I hope that the more we can explain the risks to general health then the more people will do for themselves and be encouraged to visit a hygienist."
Christina is also certain that there needs to be more hygienists.
"The government would argue that there are more dentists now than ever but we still have a problem. There has to be more access to good hygienists and i really think this is where the emphasis will be in the next few years.""

Press Release: Mouth Cancer Action Week - 16-22 November 2008 - Central Brighton Dental Spa Offers Free Screenings
The British Dental Health Foundation's Mouth Cancer Action Week takes place between 16 and 22 November 2008, with the mission to educate the public about prevention of a disease that kills one person every five hours in the UK - more people than cervical and testicular cancer combined.
This year's campaign will use the tagline 'If in doubt, get checked out' to raise awareness of the importance of early detection of tumours in the mouth, throat, voice box, salivary glands, nose and sinuses. Easily recognisable symptoms and regular check ups can boost survival rates to 90 per cent with early detection, but survival rates once mouth cancer has spread are as low as 50 per cent.

Christina Chatfield, Practice Director at Dental Health Spa is keen to raise awareness of mouth cancer and works with clients at her practice on techniques for prevention of the disease. She comments: "It is extremely important to make regular visits to your dental professional who will routinely screen you for complications that could lead to mouth cancers. Early detection and referral is the key to recovery - which is why I will be running free oral health screenings throughout Mouth Cancer Action Week."
Smoking is the number one cause of mouth cancers worldwide. To tackle this huge contributory factor, Christina has joined forces with Brighton & Hove Primary Care Trust's Smoking Cessation clinics, to which she refers clients and provides meeting rooms free of charge at her Queen's Road premises. Contact Dental Health Spa to book an appointment.
To tie in with the 2008 Action Week's campaign 'If in doubt, get checked out' campaign Dental Health Spa will hold free oral health screenings on Monday 17, Tuesday 18, Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 November. The team will offer free advice on early detection and prevention of mouth cancer at these sessions, which are open to all - not just existing Dental Health Spa clients. To book, please call the Dental Health Spa on 01273 710831. Christina will also hold a fund raising evening at her Queen's Road practice on Thursday 20 November 2008, where proceeds from a silent auction will be donated to Mouth Cancer Action Week.

Press Release: The White Stuff - Look 10 years younger with a Spa White smile
One of the UK's first dental hygiene clinics, Brighton's Dental Health Spa, will celebrate their first birthday by launching Spa White, a division focusing solely on tooth whitening. Spa White opens on 17 September and will offer clients a youth-enhancing Hollywood-bright smile in less than one hour.
Unlike some tooth whitening clinics, Spa White is fully regulated and approved by the General Dental Council. Their clinicians are all fully trained professionals with many years experience of tooth whitening, guaranteeing the very best personalised treatment and results every time. Spa White will offer four types of whitening:
- Pola office: (£475) The very latest and fastest whitening system - delivering excellent results in just 30 minutes. This light activated treatment uses a high concentration whitening gel and results are instant.
- Pola day + Pola night: (£199) A take-home tooth whitening treatment. The Spa White team create a bespoke set of trays (similar to a mouth guard) for each client that are filled with a spearmint flavoured crystal clear gel and worn day or night to whiten the teeth gently and effectively.
- Pola zing: (£120) A 30 minute super fast whitening system, this treatment can be used a booster for Pola day or Pola night or simply as a top up for patients owning whitening trays from previous treatments.
- Air polish: (£45) A natural way to enhance the colour of your teeth, air polishing uses a mixture of bicarbonate of soda, air and water under pressure to remove every day stains left by tea, coffee and nicotine.
Dental Health Spa opened on September 17, 2007 with a very clear mission - to provide a wide range of high quality oral hygiene treatments in a relaxing 'spa' environment. Practice director Christina Chatfield, a dental hygienist with over 25 years experience in practice and within major blue chip health companies, is passionate about empowering the patient and making excellent dental hygiene treatments easily accessible for all.
Christina says: "Many of my customers have experienced long delays in getting to see a hygienist and as a result could be at risk of gum disease. With research showing that more teeth are lost due to ongoing gum disease than to dental cavities, it is clear that regular hygienist appointments are as important as regular dentist appointments. At Dental Health Spa we are committed to delivering treatments that safeguard the health of our patient's teeth and, with the addition of Spa White, increase oral confidence."
Spa White will open with an exclusive event at the Queens Road clinic on Wednesday 17 September. Clients signing up for any whitening treatment within the first month of trading will receive a free air polish worth £45.

Daily Mirror review - Can you really get a Hollywood smile for £6.99?

"Jazmine Williams, 25 Air Polish Dental Health Spa Brighton £45 Jazmine says: It was fantastic. Really quick and painless, and surprisingly relaxing. I could have this done in my lunch hour as it only takes 15 minutes. My teeth before were a bit stained from tea and red wine so I was keen to do something about it. Verdict: I was so surprised at how different they looked and felt. Not only were they much whiter and brighter, but they felt so clean. I could feel all the grooves in my teeth and in between them. It was the first time in 25 years I have enjoyed a trip to the dentists! 10/10" |

Insight Magazine Review - Clean and serene

"With its unique approach to preventative dental care, Dental Health Spa is a breath of fresh air. If you are one of the many people who can't find an NHS dentist to take a look at their teeth - or if you are one of the lucky few who can, but feel short-changed by the basic level you get - the opening of Dental Health Spa on Queen's Road should be music to your ears. Brighton's first independent hygiene centre, Dental Health Spa has been opened by a team of hygienists to plug what they see as a gaping hole in the market. By offering affordable and accessible dental hygiene in a a contemporary, comfortable and welcoming practice in a High Street location, the centre is aiming to provide preventative care above and beyond the basic service provided by NHS practices. A key driver is referrals from local dentists but because of its location walk-in trade constitutes a large part of their business - which is just the way they want it. The centre itself feels like a health spa - the clue is in the name and it's the effect one can assume they were hoping for - with a muted blue and grey colour scheme and miles of sandblasted glass. It's equipped with the very latest tools and technology - I was treated to a state-of-the-art 'air polish' which was a quick and comfortable way to leave your teeth spotlessly clean and stain-free - and equipped with its own infection control room. You're not going to catch anything nasty here. But beyond the centre itself, what marks the spa out as really innovative is its customer-focused approach. The centre operates opening times designed around busy lifestyles - it's open Saturdays and from eight 'til eight during the week - and it's location on Queens Road makes it easy to access for commuters, visitors and residents alike. The emphasis is very much on preventative care too, rather than fixing conditions once they've become a problem, which is the modus operandi of much of the dentistry profession. There is a dentist at the practice who patients can choose to see if they wish, but the key driver is hygiene: customers are encouraged to have regular hygiene maintenance sessions and to make oral health part of their daily health and beauty routine. With both botox and chiropody to be added to the list of treatments later this year, Dental Health Centre is set to be the place for top-to-toe treatments..." |
